What I should be doing today

Welcome to my very first blog! Not such an exciting beginning topic to blog about, but an honest to goodness fact of life. My life that is. You see…I’m procrastinating.

Again.

What should I be doing today–and this very minute? Writing, writing and writing of course. So what am I actually doing? Visiting one of the online science websites and reading about some new deep sea species of grouper that’s recently been discovered to be different from another species of deep sea grouper. Do I really need to know this? Not so much. But it’s just one more distraction.

As is the fact that I have chosen this exact moment to blog, when in actuality, I don’t have much to say.

So, I’m off to scribble a few words in my get this darn book finished book and seriously debating on getting an outside office, or maybe just a nearby Starbucks where I can set up camp.

Until next time,

Eden

Hey Eden! Love the new blog, very pretty!! And who doesn’t need to know about the grouper, lol. It’s fascinating stuff and technically, it’s research so it counts as work. Oh, hey, look, I found procrastination’s sister… justification. lol

    Good luck working!

  2. Shelby Reed Says:

Oh, I am so with you on the procrastination issue. We’re currently experience heavy winds and rain due to Hurricane Fay-what a perfect time to write, right? WRONG!!! It’s a perfect time to watch bad morning talk shows and play on the Internet! I obviously need external deadlines. LOL

What a beautiful website you have. And what a GREAT topic for writers.

Oh yeah. Procrastination and I go WAAAAAAAY back. ;)

You have a GORGEOUS website. I’m envious. hehe Welcome to the blog-o-sphere!

Oddly enough, Eden, I was just musing about procrastination myself. Amazing the number of things a writer can do to keep from writing, no? I’m partial to learning important facts of history. Not pertinent to my WIP, but hey, they’re IMPORTANT, right? And I’ll be smarter, and a better conversationalist, blah blah blah.

I was reading Sark’ Living Juicy: Daily Morsels for your Creative Soul and lo and behold, the first thing she addresses: Procrastination! Her ultimate advice, identify, embrace, understand and then release your procrastination for it has served you.

But hey, the stuff about the grouper will make you a better person. Never regret it!

Excellent first topic! It afflicts all of us.
You also have a beautifully designed site.
This is a great beginning, and I’ll be back for more.

I’m procrastinating, too. I have a load of work to do at the day job. And what am I doing? Reading Robin’s blog! LOL!

Lovely site. You are not alone in this procrastinating thing. I should be writing, writing, writing too, but I’m here on your blog. Fun distraction however.

God only knows procrastination is the writer’s virus. I nearly had to stick pins in myself to get back to a half-finished manuscript and pick it up where I’d left off. You hit the nail right on the head. I, too, should be writing, writing, writing. I left my h/h in the bathtub together and they’ll be shriveled prunes if I don’t get started again soon!! Gret topic and great blog.

  9. Judith Rochelle Says:

Boy, you hit the nail right on the head. I, too, should be writing, writing, writing. I left my h/h in the bath tub and they’ll be prunes if I don’t get back to this almost-finished WIP. Great topic, great blog/

I like justification so much better. I use the kitchen timer. Have to write until it beeps. Reset it (my exercise since I have to stand up and walk into the kitchen) for my five minutes of internet time. Reset it (more exercise!) for writing time. Write until timer goes off. Repeat.

    Welcome to blogging!

Ah, yes, the ever expanding to-do list that insists on precedence. Working at home puts us too close to those sniggering dust bunnies. And it’s amazing how an honest research question can take you to places you never thought you’d see–or even wished to see. (BTW, I like my grouper poached regardless of its previous domicile.

Lovely site. Now, back to work—all of us!

Lovely blog Eden! And it seems that your boyfriend Procrastination is cheating on you because he spends a fair amount time here at my house….. Just so you know.

  13. Lynn Says:

    Eden,

Ah yes, the deep sea grouper… mnnn…. guess what I was doing yesterday? LOL I seem to have become a master of that of late. Well, the procrastination, not the deep sea groper… I mean grouper. ;o)

Did you see how many rows of teeth that thing has? 5! That’s a bit overkill, ennit?

And did you see the darling baby whale that thinks a boat is it’s mama? Poor little thing. Hope a surrogate mama comes by and claims the poor dear.

What’s that you say? I’m procrastinating again? No! Get out! *guilty as charged*

And another thing, why does email take soooo long to do?

    Well. Let’s see… write. Yes, yes, I must. I know… I’m going… honest… Oooo what’s that over there? …

    LOL

I like the outside office idea. Starbucks sounds good too. I am contemplating an electrical shock machine that every time I stray from my focus I get a little zap to remind me I should be writing.

Okay okay okay, bad idea… it’ll sound like Frankenstein’s lab in here! ZZZzttttt!

    ;o)

Procrastination as a boyfriend…I love it.

    Hi Eden,
Hey, it’s a start, brave one! A daily blog is quite a committment. Congratulations! Check out my blog at my website http://www.SusanYarina.com and you’ll see that it’s anything but daily, but when the mood strikes me and sometimes when the guilt strikes me, I blog. It occurs to me that I need to be putting in some of my writing skill tips, just in case writers (like you) stop by. So, from now on, there will be tips interspersed with bits about me and the writing life.
    Write on,
    ~~Susan Yarina

Procrastination? Never heard of it. I just don’t have enough time to write. Sigh. Am I procrastinating or run of desire to write. Say it isn’t so. The stories are in my head waiting for me to let them out. Is it the balmy summer weather here in Victoria? Or watching the Olympics? Or being bloody tired. Tomorrow will be better! I will write 500 - 1000 words. Thanks for putting the slackers among us to the test.

  17. Ashley Ladd Says:

Beautiful site. Good luck with your new blogging venture.

Unfortunately, procrastination is my brother, too.

  18. Kim Watters Says:

    Hi Eden,
Great site. We must be related then. Procrastination is my middle name! :)

  19. Laurie Schnebly Campbell Says:

Eden, I love your idea of getting an office or a Starbucks — seems like having “office hours” makes it tougher to procrastinate. (Although I do my share even at the office, but not as badly as at home.)

Best results I’ve ever gotten — well, aside from a deadline — have been from promising someone what I’m going to get done. It feels so horrible to break a promise that it’s great motivation to stop procrastinating and get back to work!

Hi your web site is great I love it. Your books are great!
    Thanks
